Did any of the texts you heard about sound interesting to you? Were there any you already knew about? What do these texts tell you about the differences or similarities between you and your classmates? What might account for these differences or similarities?
I thought today was also interesting. I like that it was short and sweet- getting out of class early is alway nice. I was surprised because I have actually read/seen a lot of them overall despite how little I read compared to most people. I only read books because my sister (an avid reader) highly suggests them, so clearly these texts are really excellent. I've read Tuesday With Morrie, but honestly forgot about it for a while. After Ian's presentation I think I will definitely check it out again because I love hearing advice from those who have lived so much longer and have a ton more experience. I also read 19 Minutes a while back and completely forgot about it and what it was about, Carrie's presentation was a great refresher for me. Jodi Picoult really has controversial but engaging and page turning texts. Once again, I definitely want to check them out. When I read them I was at a different stage in my life, and I feel like I know so much more about controversial issues, and they affect me more. I want to look up some of her other novels because I am sure there will be one about an issue that will really draw me in like it did for Carrie. I was also so excited to see Humans of New York on someone's canon, I wish I put it on mine. It really has had an impact on my life as well, but for different reasons. It was really cool to hear about Julie's unique context around why she loved it so much. For me, I saw it on Facebook and thats where I see it. I feel like when I am on Facebook everyone is relatively the same- coming from the suburbs to Miami, people post the same kind of things, and it is usually just photos with no captions. But with Humans of New York it pops up on my newsfeed in the midst of everything else and just reminds me that there is so much more to the world and people. It reminds me that although society and people seems a certain way, that is not the truth at all, that is just who I am around. It also gives me a pick me up and reminds me that people are in worse situations, or that life is so much more than getting good grades and extracurriculars. I think this really expresses context which is another reason why all of our views on the texts vary, because we come from different environments. If I was in NYC, I definitely would not be the same as who I am no. NYC attracts people from all over. In a sense, these presentations was similar to Humans of New York as it gave us a quick glimpse into people's lives.
